The article examines for the first time some aspects of the life and creative work of Pavel Augustovich Pabst (1854–1897), one of the most prominent Russian pianists of the last third of the 19th century. The article is based on a wide range of historical materials, many of which are new to the scientific community (reviews in Russian and foreign publications, memoirs of contemporaries, reference works, and archival documents from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the Russian National Museum of Music, the Russian National Library, and others). The article reveals the ways of formation and development of his artistic image, as well as the different influences of his teachers, which led to the specific features of his pianism, which can be described as the well-known versatility of his performing style. The article also explores the extensive and diverse concert repertoire of the pianist. It clarifies the time when he began his work at the Moscow Conservatory. The article analyzes Pabst’s place among other concert pianists and leading teachers of the piano department at the Moscow Conservatory during his time, such as S. I. Taneyev and V. I. Safonov. A comparative analysis of their performance activities as pianists is conducted. Creative connections with N. G. and A. G. Rubinstein, P. I. Tchaikovsky, A. I. Ziloti, S. V. Rakhmaninov, and A. S. Arensky are also revealed. The reasons for the well-known underestimation of the pianist’s work are identified.
