For the first time in Russian musical science the article deals with the characteristics of the style of folk songs of the Tunbai highlanders. It is said that mountain songs — shangge (山歌) are one of the main genres of Chinese folk music and are born directly in the process of labor activity and the very life of the Chinese people while traveling in the mountains, cutting wood, grazing livestock, and are sung at folk parties for self-entertainment. They exist in inaccessible mountainous areas, and the very tradition of their performance and existence is preserved due to its remoteness from civilization. In the process of analysis, it turns out that shange is characterized by: a five-line structure of stanza and melostrophe, the presence of complex final and internal rhymes, the presence of metaphor, the aphorism of the text, its saturation with auxiliary inserted words, extended melodies developing from the material of the first phrase, pentatonic scales, concentration of the melody on terts modal “core”. It is determined that the performing style of local singers is characterized by a powerful, sonorous sound style, and their singing is distinguished by simplicity and free expression of feelings. The conclusion summarizes and emphasizes that despite the prevalence of the genre in other provinces and the general similarity of local traditions, the mountain songs of Tunbay are distinguished by the stability of their structure, the complexity of rhyming, the imagery and colorfulness of the dialect sound of the language.
