The article attempts to reflect from today’s perspective the main ideas of the book by the famous Slavist Omri Ronen, published in Russian in 2000 under the title “The Silver Age as Intention and Fiction”. In Russia, discussions and interpretations of Ronen’s book had three main focuses. The first focused on the origins and dissemination of the term, the second focused on its semantic adequacy, and the third focused on its evaluative aspects. As the author of the book shows, the tradition of referring to the first decades of the 20th century as the «Silver Age» originated among the Russian émigré community. This metaphor was uncritically adopted by the Soviet intelligentsia in the 1980s, becoming an expression of nostalgic longing for the lost creative freedom of the early 20th century. According to Ronen, the original meaning of the term, as presented in the works of R.I.Ivanov-Razumnik and V.A.Pyast, was distorted in the article by N.A.Otsup (1933), who ignored the critical assessments of the era in question. Ronen concludes that the «erroneous term» should be «expelled from the halls of Russian literature.» However, it is unlikely that we can follow his call today and abandon the established naming of the era. At the same time, all the origins and meanings of the term «Silver Age» found in his book should be taken into account in modern discussions about it, and the history of its emergence and life is important and interesting in itself

В статье предпринимается попытка осмыслить с сегодняшних позиций основные идеи книги известного слависта Омри Ронена, вышедшей на русском языке в 2000 году под названием «Серебряный век как умысел и вымысел». В России обсуждения и толкования книги Ронена имели три основных направления. Первое включало поиски происхождения и путей распространения термина, второе — проблемы его смысловой адекватности, третье — его оценочные аспекты. Как показывает автор книги, традиция называть эпоху первых десятилетий ХХ столетия «серебряным веком» родилась в среде русской эмиграции. Эта метафора была некритически принята советской интеллигенцией 1980-х годов, став выражением ностальгической тоски по утраченной творческой свободе начала ХХ века. По мнению Ронена, первоначальный смысл термина, представленный в работах Р.И.ИвановаРазумника и В.А.Пяста, был искажен в статье Н.А.Оцупа (1933), игнорировавшего критические оценки обсуждаемой эпохи. Ронен делает вывод о том, что «ошибочный термин» должен быть «изгнан из чертогов российской словесности». Однако вряд ли сегодня возможно последовать его призыву и отказаться от сложившегося именования эпохи. Вместе с тем все обнаруженные в его книге истоки и смыслы термина «серебряный век» должны быть учтены в современных рассуждениях о нем, а история его возникновения и жизни важна и интересна сама по себе
