<p>Among Russian opera singers who came into contact with the grandiose R. Wagner’s works at the turn of the XIX–XX centuries, the figure of Marianna Borisovna Cherkasskaya (1876–1934), the prima donna of the Mariinsky Theater, who gained European fame in this role, stands out. Having a dramatic soprano voice with a wide range, the artist managed to master the appropriate style of performance, which her contemporaries always admired. It is no coincidence that she was considered one of the best Brunhilds of her time, which was recognized both by Russian and foreign critics. The original documents of the epoch clearly demonstrate the level of skill and the importance of Cherkasskaya’s work for the formation and development of the “Russian Wagnerian”. Only this fact would have been enough to rank her among the leading representatives of the musical academic art of that time. However, the artist’s repertoire was much more diverse and included a number of major roles in famous operas of the domestic and foreign composers. So, another famous role of Marianna Borisovna was Fevronia in the opera “The Tale of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Virgin of Fevronia” by N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. In the singer’s interpretation, the image of the meek maiden acquired such exceptional persuasiveness that it became associated with her among contemporaries. Thereby, M. B. Cherkasskaya made an important contribution not only to the formation and development of the “Russian Wagneriana”, but also to the national opera art as a whole, therefore, the importance of her work in this context cannot be overestimated.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>М. Б. В. Cherkasskaya</kwd><kwd>Wagner</kwd><kwd>Wagnerian singer</kwd><kwd>“Russian Wagnerian”</kwd><kwd>Brunhilda</kwd><kwd>Fevronia</kwd><kwd>Mariinsky Theatre</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">Ежегодник Императорских театров.
