<p>F. Lehár’s operetta “Friederike” has not been published or performed in Russia. However, it is one of the masterpieces of the Austrian composer. The purpose of this study is to characterize the image of Goethe in the operetta. The article examines the context of the genre’s dual status in the period before World War II and Lehar’s attempt to revive the traditions of the singspiel in his production, which was not entirely successful. Despite the superficial resemblance to this genre, the
content, musical characteristics, and dramatic elements, as well as the requirements for vocal skills, indicate that Lehar’s focus was not on the singspiel but rather on opera.
The content of the operetta is analyzed in relation to the actual facts of Goethe’s biography. The peculiarity of the libretto is noted, which is the extensive use of fragments of Goethe’s poetry
in combination with the texts of F. Lörner-Beda (one of the librettists). The importance of musical drama in portraying Goethe’s character is emphasized, as the composer employs a leitmotif system and continuous development. The two leitmotifs of Goethe’s love undergo significant transformations. The projection of the dramatization of the action in the first act is unusual: it is expressed in the use of the funeral choral in the music and the further quotation of Goethe’s poem “The Field Rose”.
Information is given about the operetta’s stage fate: its huge success after the premiere and its prohibition during the fascist regime.</p>
<kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Легар</kwd><kwd>Гёте</kwd><kwd>Фридерика</kwd><kwd>оперетта</kwd><kwd>лейтмотив любви</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Legar</kwd><kwd>Goethe</kwd><kwd>Friederike</kwd><kwd>operetta</kwd><kwd>leitmotif of love</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><ref id="ref1"><mixed-citation publication-type="other" xml:lang="ru">Петри Э.
